Kunrath Van Lam was born in Cambodia in 1972. Her father was a chemist and her mother was university-educated. Most of her family was killed when the Khmer Rouge came to power, and Kunrath, her parents, and sister escaped to a refugee camp in Thailand. Her family resettled in St. Paul, MN on November 7, 1983. Kunrath and her husband, Kevin Lam, opened Cheng Heng restaurant in 1997, the first Cambodian restaurant in St. Paul. Kunrath has sponsored the construction of two schools in Cambodia.
